The Virginia House (formerly known as The Orkney Springs Hotel) at the Shrine Mont Conference Center in Orkney Springs, Virginia, in beautiful Shenandoah Valley. This turn-of-the-century historic landmark is now part of Shrine Mont, a full-service conference and retreat center serving up to 600 people.
ORKNEY SPRINGS
The springs were known as early as 1800, but not developed as a resort until the 1850s. The oldest building of the former hotel is the two-story frame Maryland House (1853; north side of Orkney Grade). It is surrounded by two stories of galleries, which provide the only access to the hotel's rooms. The galleries have chamfered square columns.

After spending a fabulous three days there, roasting marshmallows, reading on the one of the MANY porches, eating- a lot- playing/singing a lot of music, walking, hiking, swimming, napping.

The Virginia House (formerly known as the Orkney Springs Hotel) is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was purchased by Shrine Mont in 1979. With its white clapboard structure and tall, green-shuttered windows, The Virginia House is four stories high. The 96,000 square-foot structure was built in 1875 and restored in 1987.

My review is only for the Orkney Springs Hotel and related buildings. My first time here was in 1973. My High School Band came here every year for a week long marching band camp. I also was here for band camp in 1974 and 1975. In this millennium, I have been here in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and just this past weekend in 2015.
